Randolph Caldecott Award

The Caldecott Medal is presented to the illustrator of the most distinguished picture book for children published in the United States during the preceding year.  It was named after nineteenth century English illustrator Randolph Caldecott.

Mildred L. Batchelder Award


The Mildred L. Batchelder Award is presented each year to an American publisher for the most outstanding children's book originally published in another country in a language other than English, and subsequently translated and published in the United States during the previous year.

Pura Belpre Award


The Pura Belpre Award is named after Pura Belpré, the first Latina librarian at the New York Public Library.  It is presented annually to a Latino/Latina writer and illustrator whose work best portrays, affirms, and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in an outstanding work of literature for children and youth.

John Newbery Award

The Newbery Medal is presented to the author of the most distinguished contribution to children's literature published in the United States during the preceding year.  It was named after eighteenth century  British book seller, John Newbery.

Robert F. Sibert Informational Book Medal


The Robert F. Sibert Informational Book Medal is awarded annually to the author(s) and illustrator(s) of the most distinguished informational book published in the United States in English during the preceding year.

Coretta Scott King Award

Beginning in 1974, two Coretta Scott King awards have been presented annually, one to an African American author and one to an African American illustrator, whose books for young readers published in the preceding year are deemed outstanding, educational, and inspirational.  The award commemorates the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and honors his wife, Mrs. Coretta Scott King, for her courage and determination to continue the work for peace and world brotherhood.

Children's Literature Legacy Award


The Children's Literature Legacy Award honors an author or illustrator whose books, published in the United States, have made, over a period of years, a substantial and lasting contribution to children's literature through books that demonstrate integrity and respect for all children's lives and experiences.

Mildred D. Taylor is the winner of the 2021 Children’s Literature Legacy Award honoring an author or illustrator, published in the United States, whose books have made a significant and lasting contribution to literature for children. Taylor’s award-winning works include “Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry”, which won the 1977 Newbery Medal and the Coretta Scott King Honor Award; “The Friendship,” “Road to Memphis,” and “The Land”, all recipients of the Coretta Scott King Award. In addition to numerous awards for individual books, Mildred Taylor is the 2020 recipient of the Coretta Scott King - Virginia Hamilton Award for Lifetime Achievement.
