Members Code of Conduct

NHS Membership Expectations Letter -  in regards to underage drinking, drugs, smoking, vaping and any other illegal activities.  This letter is handed out and discussed with all NHS members at the October meeting.

Dues and Fundraisers- What does NHS support and fund?

Your dues and NHS fundraiser go toward the following items:

  • NHS Induction- FAC rental and staffing, induction certificates, programs, flowers
  • Treats for meetings TBD
  • T-shirts for members and faculty council
  • Senior graduation NHS stoles
  • Faculty "thank you" dinners
  • Hamilton Education Foundation auction basket
  • Birthday card supplies- cards delivered to all students and staff
  • Resident/Nursing home flowers and card supplies for Valentine's Day
  • NHS sponsored events
  • NHS graduating class gift to the school (school improvement if there are funds for this)

Member Leadership & Character Expectations


General Qualities of Leadership:

  • Is creative in solving problems, applying ideals, and making suggestions
  • Demonstrates initiative in promoting school activities and events
  • Contributes suggestions that improve the civic aspect of school
  • Inspires positive behavior in fellow students and encourages peers to uphold school ideals
  • Is thoroughly dependable, reliable, and efficient in all tasks undertaken
  • Demonstrates academic initiative
  • Is able to delegate tasks and responsibility to others
  • Is a leader in the classroom, at work, and in other school and community activities

Leadership in the Classroom:

  • Leaders model appropriate behavior for others in class
  • Leaders focus on achieving academically and participating in class on a regular basis
  • Leaders often direct class discussion and answer sessions
  • Other class members will look to leaders when they are lost or unsure of what they are doing
  • Leaders make sure that all members of a group have shared in the workload
  • Leaders care about the quality of their classwork and diligently pursue excellence
  • Leaders consistently do homework and all other tasks assigned by the teacher
  • Leaders constantly apply themselves to the material
  • Leaders take it upon themselves to help others achieve along with them
  • Leaders actively seek to make up work rather than having the teacher tell them what must be completed
  • Leaders seek to constructively resolve problems among peers



The Qualities of Character:

  • Takes criticism willingly and accepts recommendations graciously
  • Consistently exemplifies desirable qualities of behavior (cheerfulness, friendliness, poise, stability)
  • Upholds principles of morality and ethics
  • Cooperates by complying with school regulations concerning property, programs, office, halls, etc.
  • Demonstrates the highest standards of honesty and reliability
  • Regularly shows courtesy, concern, and respect for others
  • Observes instructions and rules, is punctual, and faithful both inside and outside of the classroom
  • Has powers of concentration, self-discipline, and sustained attention as shown by perseverance and application to studies
  • Manifests truthfulness in acknowledging obedience to rules, avoiding cheating in written work, and showing unwillingness to profit by the mistakes of others
  • Actively helps rid the school of bad influences or environment
  • Demonstrates the six general qualities of respect, responsibility, trustworthiness, fairness, caring, and citizenship

Exec. Board Roles

  • Officers Planning Meeting- first Thursday or Friday of the month
  • NHS Meeting with members - second week of the month (day TBD)


  • Must attend all officer meetings during advisement and all general member meetings
  • All communication - Remind101, emails with assistance from VP, website if necessary
  • Reports out NHS business to the Student Council (to be reported in monthly updates to the Hamilton School Board)
  • Keep notes to pass on to next President
  • Produce all sign-up sheets
  • Point person- two NHS sponsored events

Vice President-

  • Must attend all officer meetings during advisement and all general member meetings
  • Public Relations (PR)- letters for the school newspaper, announcements, other
  • Maintain NHS display case in front hall - change photos monthly
  • Prepare Canva with student photos for each meeting
  • Update NHS website
  • Email to students in coordination with president
  • Fundraising distribution
  • Follow-up with members on missing fees
  • T-shirts - survey to students for sizes and assist with distribution
  • Senior stole distribution
  • Point person- two NHS sponsored events


  • Must attend all officer meetings during advisement and all general member meetings
  • Service hours sheets, review and post
  • File student service hour forms in file box
  • Check-in with advisors weekly
  • Point person- two NHS sponsored event


  • Must attend all officer meetings during advisement and all general member meetings
  • Meet with advisors prior to each officer meeting
  • Create slide notes in preparation for each meeting
  • Take attendance at meetings, review and post
  • Assist with voting in May- create/hand out slips of paper at mtg or create electronic voting survey
  • Point person- two NHS sponsored events
