How Library Books Are Shelved

Library books are shelved left to right and from top to bottom and library signage will reflect that.

Library Catalog - E = Easy or Everyone Picture Books

E DON  = Spine Label
E
= Easy or Everyone DON are the first three letters in the author's last name Donaldson, Julia.
Picture books like "Zog and the Flying Doctors" are arranged in alphabetical order by the first three letters
of the author’s last name.  
The picture book spine label has an uppercase E which stands for Easy or Everyone because all ages enjoy reading these kinds of books, followed by the author’s last name.

Dot Books - Beginning to Read Books

Fiction books are arranged in alphabetical order by the first three letters of the author’s last name. 
The fiction spine label will have FIC for fiction followed by the author’s last name

Library Catalog - PBK FIC = Paperback Fiction Books

PBK FIC ROY = Spine Label
PBK means paperback, FIC means Fiction, and ROY are the first three letters in the author's last name Roy, Ron, the author of the book :"The Runaway Racehorse".  
Both fiction and nonfiction books that are soft covered "paperbacks" have a spine labile with the beginning letters PBK that indicates the book is a paperback.

598.7 is the Dewey location of the bock "Toco Toucans Bright Enough to Disappear" in the 500's (Natural Sciences)SUE are the first three letters of the author Suen, Anastasia;

Non-fiction books are arranged on the shelves using the Dewey Decimal System.  This system invented by librarian Melvil Dewey groups books by topic, dividing them into 10 main classes or categories.  

000–099 Computer Science, Information, and General Works
100–199  Philosophy and Psychology
200–299 Religion
300–399 Social Sciences
400–499 Language
500–599 Natural Sciences 
600–699 Technology
700–799 The Arts and Recreation
800-899 Literature
900-999  History, Biography, and Geography

These 10 main groups are in turn subdivided again and again to provide more specific subject groups.  

Library Catalog - 921 = Biography Books

BIO LIN = Spine Label
Biography books are located in the 900's (Biography) shelves by who the book is about like "Who Was Abraham Lincoln?", instead of by the author’s last name.  For example, all the biography books written about President Abraham Lincoln by various authors are placed on the shelf together, making it easier to find all the books in the collection written about that person. The Biography spine label is designated with the letters BIO (Biography) followed by the first three letters of the famous person’s last name Lincoln, Abraham. .

Destiny Classic Search - Title Searching

Title Searching - Searches for your search term anywhere in the title. 

  • You do not have to capitalize the book's title.
  • You can often do a title search by just typing the beginning two or three words of the title.
  • The title words that you type in the search box must be spelled correctly.
  • Pressing enter on your keyboard is the same as clicking on the title button

Destiny Classic Search - Author Searching

Author Searching - Searches for authors and illustrators.

  • You can search for an author by typing in their last name followed by their first name. example - Carle, Eric
  • You do not have to capitalize the author’s name but you must spell it correctly.
  • Spacing is also very important. example – clements,andrew will not give you any search results.
  • Although grammatically correct, punctuation marks like comas are not needed after the author's last name. clements andrew

Destiny Classic Search - Subject Searching

Subject Searching - Searches for titles about a particular subject, topic, person, or place.

  • To do a subject search, think of a topic or subject that you are interested in an type it into the search box.
  • You do not have to capitalize the topic or subject.
  • The topic or subject you choose should be spelled correctly and entered in the plural form if possible like lions instead of lion

Destiny Classic Search - Series Search

Series Searching - Searches for titles in a particular series of books.

  • You can do a series search to find out how many books we have in a particular series.
  • Spelling the name of the series correctly counts. 
  • Capitalization is not necessary when typing out the name of a series.

Destiony Classic Search - Keyword Search

Keyword Searching - Searches all title, author, subject, series, and note tags (fields of information) in the district’s title records. 

  • The keyword search is the most powerful of all searches because you will find books with the keyword in their title or their record.
  • You will find both fiction and non-fiction books with a keyword search.
  • Just like in all of the other searches, spelling the keyword correctly is important.

Destiny Searching Using Wildcards

Wildcards - are helpful when you are unsure of the complete word or do not know the exact spelling.

  • An asterisk (*) replaces any number of letters at the end of a word.  If you don’t know the complete word or aren’t sure how to spell it, add an asterisk (*) to the end of what you know.  However, the * can’t be used as a word’s first or second letter or have any letters after it.
  • A question mark (?) replaces single letters. You can use more than one question mark in a word, but it can’t be the first or last letter or have any letters after it.

Placing a Hold on a Book in Destiny

Destiny - Placing holds on library materials.

  • Use a title, author, subject, series or keyword search to locate a book or other library material you want. 
  • Check to see if what you are looking for is available. If the book or other library material is available,
    YOU CAN NOT PLACE A HOLD ON IT! 
  • If the book is not available, click on the book's title.  Then click on the Hold It button on the right hand side of the screen, and then you will go to a final screen where you can click Save
